6 must-see TED Talks with an inspiring message

Ever since I discovered the platform of TED Talks I have been hooked to watching their inspiring videos. A great TED Talk delivers a belief-flipping, game-changing experience that has you buzzing in awe, all neatly packed into a 20-minute coffee break. Which is exactly what I love about it. It’s like a quick pep talk to open your mind. Some of my favorite speakers have sparked my curiosity on subjects that I had never given any thought before and that turned out to significantly alter my belief system in the most surprising of ways.

So in the spirit of TED’s motto of “Ideas worth spreading”, I would like to share with you some of my favorite inspiring videos that have definitely turned my world around.

1. Brené Brown, The Power of Vulnerability

I think Brené is just great. She has a way of speaking that is exceptionally relatable, authentic and funny. Plus she has a healthy dose of self-mockery, which I greatly appreciate. This talk about how she found that embracing our vulnerability is the key to living a wholehearted life is truly eye opening. It struck a chord with me on the deepest level. We encounter vulnerability on a daily basis, yet most of us have no idea how to deal with it. Brené’s empowering message is universal and encourages us to let ourselves be seen fully and authentically, which I feel is crucial in today’s increasingly hardening society.

If you’re hooked after watching this one, you’ll also love her other talk on ‘Listening to Shame’.

2. Jia Jiang, What I learned from 100 days of rejection

Watching this video, I was truly amazed by the amount of courage this guy has shown. When he found out what his greatest fear was, instead of running away (like most would), he made a decision to look it straight in the eyes and confront it full on. For 100 days straight… What happened next was pure magic. So simple, so hard, yet so effective. After coming out on the other side he now shares his wisdom by giving lectures and through his book and coaching program. The fear of rejection is something most of us struggle with for our whole lives, trying to avoid situations that might trigger it at all cost. The result is that we are missing out on potentially great opportunities. Jia shows us that conquering this fear and stopping it from holding us back, is only one brave decision away.

3. Amy Cuddy, Your Body Language Shapes Who You Are

Now this talk’s life hack has literally changed my life. In this inspiring and crystal clear lecture Amy talks about how our body’s posture influences the way we feel. Want to feel confident while you’re actually feeling super insecure? Just fake it ‘til you make it! I’ve watched this video a couple of times and as a result, I have become more conscious about my body’s posture, especially in situations that make me feel vulnerable. Surprisingly I have noticed that taking on what Amy calls a ‘power pose’, on several occasions actually made me feel more powerful and confident. And while you can still argue whether that’s a placebo effect or not, if it works, it works! Right? She certainly provides a refreshing take on non-verbal communication and how we can make use of it in our daily lives.

4. Susan Cain, The Power of Introverts

While the title suggests this talk is particularly geared towards introverts, I feel it is actually of equal, if not greater, importance to anyone who considers themselves an extrovert or anything in-between. The value of introverts in a society that reveres outgoing and social behavior is one of the most underestimated concepts of our time. Gladly Susan is now spreading her empowering message worldwide with her business called the ‘Quiet Revolution’. Her talk speaks to your heart and just might help you to see which introverts are hiding as extroverts in your environment.

5. Elizabeth Gilbert, Your Elusive Creative Genius

Listening to Liz Gilbert is always a treat. She’s witty, original and always leaves me buzzing with inspiration. In this talk, she challenges us to completely rethink the way we view creativity and inspiration, by raising the notion that people might not “be” a genius, but rather “have” a genius. With this compelling story, she pulls you in and offers us a brand new perspective on the creative process that so many of us struggle with from time to time. So next time you’re starting to feel desperate and overwhelmed about a creative project you’re working on, remember to watch this video! It will surely pull you out of your rut.

6. Kathryn Schulz, On Being Wrong

This talk is a particularly confronting one and is guaranteed to make you feel a little bit silly. For some reason or the other, most of us move heaven and earth to avoid having to admit that we’re wrong. But what is the reason behind this? Kathryn makes a compelling case for embracing the fact that we’re actually wrong most of the time and most importantly: why that is not such a big deal at all. In this funny and recognizable talk, she tells it like it is and makes you see why the truth is always somewhere in the middle. It will leave you wondering if you’ve been wrong about being wrong all along.
